Daily Grind

It's so, so nice to have finally figured out my own, personal "closing" routine at the Coffee Shop. No more frantic racing {okay, maybe a little - but not nearly as much. heh.} to just close on time. It's fun to take your cup of flavor-of-the-day and leisurely "dust everything" (which is, literally, what it's called on the to-do list.) There are some hilarious things that I've figured out, though. Some of them kinda surprised me.

  • Most people think we close an hour later than we actually do, for some reason. I hate being the enforcer. Really, I try to be simple and courteous in my dismissals, but if feels like: "Well, yes, we actually closed forty-five minutes ago, and...um,  I really have nothing left to do but the cash drawer and locking the doors so...I mean...could you...maybe...like..."
  • I was surprised to find that some ladies find it offensive to be called "Ma'am." I felt absolutely terrible.
  • Lock them doors, girl. Even if the gift-shop lights are off, nobody's in the cafe area and all-but-one of the open signs are down, chances are that people will still come in. It's mighty startling to find somebody standing there in the dark...
  • Sometimes, at six in the morning, 20 oz. 2-go cups just explode. Tried putting the lid on and, next thing I know, my feet, the rug and my clothes are covered in 20 perfect ounces of hot coffee. I just kinda stood there. "Do you have time for me to make you another one...?"
But I love my job. You should come see me at work sometime, girls! Better latte than never...
