Anna's Nutty News: Facts: Hiccups

Hiccups are hilarious, awful, and strange things. Sometimes they're BIG and sometimes they're little. Sometimes they make us embarrassed, sometimes they make us cry. They can make make us laugh, smile, giggle (betwixt the hiccups themselves of course) and they can make us feel ill.

However good or bad the effects of hiccups may be on your particular person, it's always good to have an escape plan for when you don't want them. First: I'm going to tell you a little about them. (As said by the health website I got this information off of.)

"From a physical standpoint, hiccups are caused by uncontrolled spasms of the diaphragm. Each spasm causes quick intake of breath, which makes a hiccup. The phrenic nerve, which controls the diaphragm, is directly responsible for these spasms. From a physiological standpoint, the medical community has not reached a consensus on why hiccups occur. One thing doctors agree on is that hiccups do not seem to serve any useful purpose."

There.

Now, for the cure: I was told about this remedy for hiccups a few years back, and have, obviously, tried it and found it to be successful. I challenge each and every one of you to try this next time you have hiccups.

Take a tablespoon of lemon juice...and....swallow it.

Don't worry, you're allowed to sputter, make choking noises, gasp, pucker up your lips, squint your eyes, etc. As far as I know, your immediate reaction to the lemon juice will not effect its work. :D

I think everyone can agree on that. And we don't even have to have a high school diploma to figure that out.

;o)

Oh, boy. I've always considered myself extremely blessed that I've never caught the hiccups in public. Except once. Because. Well. It's not pretty. But I might just carry a bottle of lemon juice around, just in case.............
